Driver License Division - Driver Education Requirements

Drivers 16 and 17 years of age:

  • must pass a written test and apply for a learner permit (can apply for a permit at age 15);
  • must hold the Utah learner permit for a minimum of 6 months;
  • must complete a Driver Education Course;
  • must complete 40 hours of practice driving (10 at night);
  • must have parent's signature on application; and
  • must pass driving skills test.

Drivers 18 years of age:

  • must pass written test and apply for a learner permit (no minimum time to hold permit required);
  • must complete a Driver Education Course; and
  • must pass a driving skills test.

Drivers 19 years of age:

  • must pass a written test and apply for a learner permit;
  • must hold a Utah learner permit for a minimum of 90 days and have completed 40 hours of practice driving (10 at night); or
  • complete an approved Driver Education Course in lieu of holding the learner permit and complete the 40 hour driving requirement; and
  • must pass driving skills test.

NOTES:

  • learner permits issued prior to July 1, 2012 will count towards the learner permit requirements
  • regardless of when a learner permit was issued the driver will be given credit for time they have held a Utah learner permit only
