Highway Patrol - Employment - Training Requirements

Upon being hired a trooper must successfully complete training as follows:

  • If not already certified, a new trooper spends 15 weeks (Paid) in the Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST). (More Information)
  • After completing POST, approximately 100 hours of instructions with the UHP Training Section for new hires. This includes: Firearms, EVO (Emergency Vehicle Operation), self-defense, and introduction to the FTO (Field Training Officer) program.
  • FTO program is performance based lasting 8 to 12 weeks.

Ongoing training requirements include:

  • In-service
  • Intoxilyzer
  • Firearms
  • Emergency Vehicle Operation (EVO)
  • Radar
